Anthony D'Amico, MD, PhD

Even as a world-renowned physician-researcher, Anthony D'Amico, MD, PhD, chief of Genitourinary Radiation Oncology at Dana-Farber and Brigham and Women's Hospital, is still passionate about learning. He has gained international recognition for his work in detecting, staging, and treating prostate cancer, including how to use PSA, a screening test for the disease, to improve its effectiveness.

Yet one way he is able to keep learning is by writing and editing books related to prostate cancer. "Editing a textbook gives me the opportunity to select authors for each of the chapters," he notes. "I get to see their perspective on the topic, and not everyone has the same perspective."

He has co-edited four books, among them Prostate Cancer: Principles & Practice, which he edited with Dana-Farber oncologist Philip Kantoff, MD, and others, and whose latest edition was published in 2005. "For every solid tumor, there is a 'bible' all doctors use – a textbook for basic principles," D'Amico says. "This did not exist in prostate cancer until we produced one."

His next writing goal is to publish a book on prostate cancer focused on patients. "The language of physicians is straightforward," says D'Amico, "but a book for patients has to be well-articulated and presented in non-technical language." He hopes his patients, some of whom are writers, will help him.
