Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have options about where I receive treatment, or must I be treated at Dana-Farber/Brigham & Women's Cancer Center (DF/BWCC)?
Your plan of care and where you receive treatment are completely your choice. We are a national, comprehensive cancer center, and we are able to provide a variety of clinical and support services for you and your family. However, should you choose to seek care elsewhere (for example, if you prefer to receive treatment closer to home), your health care providers can also offer guidance or information to you and/or the physician you choose. Our staff is prepared to discuss all of these options, including the possibility of clinical trials, with you and your family.
If I choose to receive treatment at DF/BWCC, am I considered a Dana-Farber patient or a Brigham and Women's patient?
You are considered a "Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center" patient. You will receive your inpatient care–such as biopsies, day surgery, and overnight surgeries–at the Brigham and Women's campus. You will receive your outpatient care–such as oncology clinic appointments and infusions–at the Dana-Farber campus. Some procedures, such as radiation therapy or scans, can occur on either campus. Please contact your physician's office if you have any questions about the location of your appointments.
When will I learn the details of my pathology report?
It takes about 7-10 days for your physician to receive the actual pathology report, although he or she may have an informal discussion with you sooner. If you have any concerns during this wait period, please feel free to call his or her office directly.
Which of my doctors should I call with questions?
Questions regarding your surgical procedure or your recovery following surgery should be directed to your surgeon. Questions about radiation treatment should be directed to your radiation oncologist. All other questions related to your cancer diagnosis and treatment options should be directed to your primary oncologist.
What resources are available to my family and me?
Our goal is to provide easy access to all of our resources. The Support Services Section of this Web site outlines many of the programs, resources and network opportunities available at both the Brigham and Women's and Dana-Farber campuses. We also encourage you to call or e-mail our resource line if you would like assistance finding these resources.
Who do I contact if I have questions about support services?
Please feel free to call the Oncology Resource Line at (617) 650-9395, or e-mail DFBWCCResourceline@partners.org.
