Research Core Facilities

In support of its research and educational activities, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has developed and centrally maintains a variety of core facilities and service functions to support its research and educational activities, including:

Animal Research Facility

The facility provides services and resources needed by investigators to accomplish their animal research objectives, provides training in laboratory animal care and use to staff, students and researchers, and, in conjunction with DFCI Environmental Health and Safety, monitors the safety of investigators, technicians and all personnel with laboratory animal contact.

Baruj Benacerraf Library

The Baruj Benacerraf Library provides journals and books, photocopying, interlibrary loans, database searching and training in database searching, as well as public access to computers. The library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Biohazard Containment Suite

This core provides technical support in the preparation and propagation of viral stock and cell lines. It also provides technical support in phenotypic characterization of virus variants.

Biostatistics & Computational Biology Core

Biostatistics provides biostatistical expertise for the planning, conduct, analysis, reporting, and grant preparation of clinical, laboratory, and population-based studies.

The Connell and O'Reilly Families Cell Manipulation Core

The Connell and O'Reilly Families Cell Manipulation Core provides cell processing for patients enrolled in clinical research protocols. A variety of innovative cell manipulation techniques are currently available, including processing of hematopoietic stem cells, preparation of tumor vaccines, and generation of T cells for adoptive immunotherapy.

Flow Cytometry Core Lab

The Flow Cytometry Core supports Research at Dana-Farber. Our services include three high-speed cell sorters, four tabletop analyzers that can be used 24/7, and a BioPlex 200. For more information, please visit our Web site at flowlab.dfci.harvard.edu.

Health Communication

The Health Communication Core (HCC) brings art to your science by offering DF/HCC researchers a wide range of services that help them develop and deliver their messages in a way that is engaging, attractive, and effective.

Medical Arts

Medical Arts provides complete computer and custom graphics and photography services, including all needs for scientific publications and presentations, color and black and white prints, slides, full posters and titles, brochures, flyers, adds, and special events photography.

Microarray Core Facility

Starting with RNA provided by investigators, the facility carries out expression profiling using oligonucleotide microarrays. Genome-wide SNP analysis and resequencing analysis using oligonnucleotide microarrays are also services of the laboratory.

Molecular Biology Core Facilities

The Molecular Biology Core Facilities offers a full suite of molecular biology services to the Institute as well as the surrounding Harvard Medical School. These services include automated DNA sequencing, DNA and peptide synthesis, protein sequencing, amino acid analysis, BIAcore protein ligand assays, and mass spectrometry.

The Monoclonal Antibody Core was created to provide consistent, economical, and high quality protein and antibody generation and production, as well as to provide antibody-related products and services to support basic research and clinical projects.

The facility provides reagents, equipment, and expertise to design, optimiz,e and perform cell-based, arrayed lentiviral RNAi screens.

The Shannon McCormack Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory

The Shannon McCormack Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory provides miRNA expression profiling and human cell line identity verification, as well as support for clinical research studies that include specimen processing and tracking, DNA sequencing, microsatellite and SNP analyses, quantitative PCR, and other methods used to analyze genes that may be involved in the etiology of cancer.

Transgenic Mouse Core

The core provides holding, breeding, and cryopreserving of mouse models as well as technical support and expertise in the area of transgenic and gene targeted mouse models.

Tumor Imaging Metrics Core

The core provides standardized structural and functional radiological measurements (e.g. RECIST, WHO, Cheson, SUV) for CT, MR and PET imaging modalities to evaluate tumor response for DF/HCC clinical trials.
